Mushroom Blonde Is the New Winter Hair-Color Trend, and It's Surprisingly Pretty
Unlike the majority of your hair-color trends named for delicious foods and refreshing beverages, a hue inspired by an edible fungus doesn't sound all that appealing. And yet, while thumbing through my Instagram feed earlier, I was introduced to a shade that's being dubbed "mushroom blonde," and believe it or not, it's so pretty.
The mastermind behind this hair-color creation — which is meant to mimic the cool, multi-toned color of the commonly-used ingredient — is Yokasta Perez (aka Yokii Techi on Instagram), a hairstylist based in Rockville, Maryland. Perez debuted the look with a side-by-side transformation shot of her client who went from a bright and warm, medium-blonde shade to the cool, blondish-brown color.

Color correction on my lovely client; we decided to go a lot ashier this time," Perez writes in her Instagram caption. The hair-color pro continues: "[I] gave her a root stretch for her previous balayage with a lovely level 6 ash brown into an ash beige blonde using all @schwarzkopfusa vibrance line and @brazilianbondbuilder for the best color longevity." Perez adds that she styled her client's hair using entirely Redken products.
At first glance, a casual, non-rainbow color like mushroom blonde may not seem like a groundbreaking revelation — it certainly falls under the ever-trending "bronde" category — but it's nevertheless an ultra-easy and low-maintenance way for lighter-haired folks to experiment with going darker. On the flip side, it's also perfect for deep brunettes who wish to soften up their strands this season. A fun, refreshing way to deviate from your usual hair color and play with a new tone? Whether you've been considering spicing up (or mellowing down) your look for the winter season or you simply want to tell everyone your hair color is that of a portobello mushroom, Perez's creative hue could be your new favorite shade.
